Oscar Winner Brie Larson Is in Talks to Play Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel has been one of the most-discussed roles in some time. Not just because she’s a great character, but because she’ll be the first female Marvel superhero to have a solo movie. Fans have tossed around dozens of names for the role, and now a true front runner has emerged: Oscar winner Brie Larson.

Variety reports that Larson, who just won Best Actress for Room, is “is in early talks….It is unknown where things stand in negotiations, but sources have told Variety that Larson is the first choice, and that she’s leaning toward playing the part.”

A few months ago, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told io9 “[You’ll have] a filmmaker and cast by the summer. Maybe before. Maybe after. Filmmaker announcement first.”

Now it seems that may be both true and false as no director candidates have been made public, but the casting has commenced.

Though Larson recently won an Oscar, she’s still kind of an unknown quantity, which is probably why she’s the first choice over potentially dozens of other actresses. Before Room, she was probably best known for appearances in 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Then she starred in the masterful Short Term 12, truly distinguishing herself as a powerhouse lead. Recently she also filmed another big blockbuster, Kong: Skull Island.

Captain Marvel, written by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman, is currently scheduled for release March 2019.
