John Boyega and Brie Larson among Bafta rising star nominees !

Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega has been included in the shortlist for this year’s rising star award at the Baftas.

The 23-year-old Londoner, who broke out in Attack the Block (2011), is one of five actors up for a prize previously won by James McAvoy and Tom Hardy.

This week has also seen Boyega included in Forbes’ annual 30 under 30 list, which praises talented young performers within entertainment, fashion and sport. The actor, who plays Finn in the record-breaking sci-fi sequel, will next star with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in cyber thriller The Circle.

Brie Larson, who broke out in Short Term 12 in 2013, is also among the nominees and may be up for two prizes on the night, with her performance in heavily buzzed drama Room a favourite for best actress. The 26-year-old plays a woman imprisoned and abused in a shed with her son.

Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson, who also appeared alongside Johnny Depp in last year’s crime thriller Black Mass, is also nominated, as are Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Bel Powley (The Diary of a Teenage Girl).

Last year the award, which is voted for by the public, went to Jack O’Connell, who appeared in Angelina Jolie’s second world war drama Unbroken. O’Connell will next be seen in Jodie Foster’s Money Monster alongside George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

The full list of Bafta nominations will be unveiled on 8 January.

Brie for W magazine

Brie Larson in Room
“I have always wanted to act. When I was around 7 I started auditioning,
and I recall going up for a fish-sticks commercial. By then, I was completely committed to the craft of acting and had memorized a full monologue. The director was only looking for cute kids and wasn’t interested in hearing my speech. I started sobbing. ‘They won’t let me act!’ I wailed to my mother.”

Brie Larson On ‘Room:’ “I Just Cried At So Many Points”

While Brie Larson has long been recognized as a very strong talent–by those who saw Short Term 12 in particular–Room really allows her to show the true extent of her acting chops. Not only did Larson have the physical challenges of portraying a woman abducted and held captive in a confined space for many years (and filming in that tiny space), but she also had to make the then eight year-old Jacob Tremblay into her right-hand man. Tremblay plays Jack, the son of Larson’s character Ma, and somehow the duo created an incredible on-screen connection that caries this film into potential Best Picture territory. With director Lenny Abrahamson crouched in the bathtub of ‘room’ or in a hole in the floor, Larson brought something extraordinary to life. “I didn’t know that I could do what I could do until making this movie,” she says. Currently working on Kong: Skull Island, co-starring Samuel L. Jackson, Larson talks about what went into doing Room.

27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards

Last night, Brie attended the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala at Palm Springs Convention Center in Palm Springs, California. She was totally gorgeous in her Jason Wu dress. I’ve added high-quality pictures of Brie on the red carpet, during the awards presentation, the after party and, finally, in backstage !

Brie Larson Finds a Hectic Life After ‘Room’

ARCADIA, CALIF. — Fortified by coffee and a Red Bull on the Sunday morning before Christmas, Brie Larson was hopscotching down a path at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden here. It was unseasonably cool for Southern California, but she was just happy to be outside, walking (or jumping) around.

Ms. Larson, 26, has been in show business for nearly 20 years, appearing on sitcoms (“Raising Dad”) and prestige cable shows (“United States of Tara”), starring in lauded indie movies (“Short Term 12”) and even making a brief run as a teen pop star (you may remember her album “Finally Out of P.E.”). But nothing has prepared her for all-consuming nature of the movie awards season.

Brie Larson asked her mother for “forgiveness” while shooting ‘Room’.

The 26-year-old actress – who plays a kidnapped mother who is largely in just one place throughout the movie – admits playing a parent in the harrowing role gave her a better understanding of her own parent.

She said: “The times that I would cry at home [after shooting] was when I would call my mom asking for forgiveness for all that I didn’t know as a kid.

“It wasn’t the depression of Ma’s story, it was how little I knew of the struggle of being a mother.

“Suddenly I was able to, in some ways, relieve my childhood from my mom’s perspective and see all the way she loved me and protected me and all of the ways I never noticed it.”

Brie hopes the bond between herself and her on-screen son Jack, who is played by Jacob Tremblay, nine, will appeal to everyone.

She said: “I think seeing the love between a mother and child is something we can all really relate to.

“You can remember it from you own childhood perspective and you can see it from the adult perspective.”
